(Or OMG, Would People Just Vote?!)
I don't spend much time thinking about politics. In fact, I avoid politics like a plague. But then this is more about people than politicians, so I guess it can be excused...
Right. The election for the EU parliament. Not really a big deal in Slovenia. Well, not compared to other elections. But the attitude... God, the attitude. I really don't understand people. Okay, maybe a bit. I get that some people think everything is hopeless and are completely apathetic when it comes to politics. After all, it seems the people (or at least some of them) who are supposed to be leading this country, are too busy proving how much better they are than the other parties to remember they're actually there to serve the people. Yeah, that's right. Somebody should tell them that.
I get that there are people who literally cannot go and vote because of valid reasons like hospitalisation and the like. That there are people who don't know much about the politics and don't want to vote for just somebody when they don't even know who they're voting for. Hey, I only found out there were elections a day before (though I should have notices... Graz was full of propaganda. I guess I just never connected that with Slovenia). So what? Getting a bit of information is not so very hard. Internet, anyone?
I also understand there's not always much to choose from during elections. The same old faces keep appearing all over again, and it's all come up to a point where (to some people) faces matter more than what the party stands for. So I understand the frustration, and I understand the desire to protest, but, good grief, not voting is a pretty useless form of rebellion.
Yeah, yeah, tell me how one vote won't change anything. True, most likely it won't. How about, I don't know, the votes of all those 76% of people who seem to think the same? No wonder nothing changes! People who devotedly follow one party go and vote for it while the rest sits on their thumbs and does nothing because they're powerless anyway, right? Ugh! People, come on! The worst thing, though? After they all very much didn't vote, they have the gall to complain about the situation. At least if you want to whine, know that you have done all you could have done. Know that you've tried.
